Upgrading v3150 -> v3310? Empty
MessageSujet: Upgrading v3150 -> v3310?   Upgrading v3150 -> v3310? Icon_minitimeMar 24 Fév - 21:30

Greetings, Bill!

I've been running on v3150 for a couple years now. No complaints really, but I see that you have added a lot of nice features to v3310 and I thought it might be nice to check them out.

However, I have one big concern. What will happen to my rules from v3150 when I upgrade? Will the rules be converted over? Or will I have to start from scratch and re-input my rules?

Thanks.

J'espere que mon anglais est claire, parce que mon francaise est tres mal. Ma question. Est-ce que les regles va converter automatiquement a le nouveau version v3310? Merci beaucoup.

One other thing, I just donated 4 EU to your new PC fund. I realize that 4 EU doesn't buy much PC, but times are very tough here in the USA these days. Sorry.

Hello Smile

Thanks for you donation. For the moment, I have only ~60 € for my new PC :-(

Well, for your pb, v3.3.0.1 will use your config file, and all your rule, but the config file will be moved to a new location (for a better compatibility with Vista)

I have included differents way to "save" the file in case of a problem during installation, but if you want, you can copy/paste your current config.xml file to save it before doing the upgrade.

You mean settings will now be moved to the "Documents and Settings\Application Data\BPM\..."?

On the whole, I don't like this about Vista's style (running XP currently).

I try to have a very clean C: (System Partition); just O/S and programs - no data; no games.

With Vista, you get games creating huge save and replay files on the C: drive which just clutters it up.

Can I optionally have the new BPM save all its data in the BPM directory instead?

Thanks.

I have made this function because in vista, a prog can not write "easily" in the "program's file folder"

If you want, can check the "portable mode", and all your settings will be store in the application directory, as for the previous versions.

Bill,

I see that 24 core machines are being tested.

I've always thought it was a shame that you cannot sell BPM. I know in 2007, I had to have spent $1,000 on a quad core overclockable processor with liquid cooling. Without BPM, I might as well just got the fastest single core machine I could get, since my money would have been largely wasted. Easily it is worth $20 when compared to the cost of the hardware it unlocks.

Granted I was using IMAGECFG before using BPM, but that was real pain. You cannot undo an IMAGECFG. So, you need a backup copy of the orgininal EXE. Also, everytime the EXE is patched, then you need redo the affinity binding. Finally, some games I think have problem with changing the EXE and it breaks the DRM checks. So, statically changing the binding is not possible.

BPM was such a clear an intuitive tool. It is a shame you could not have gone commercial with it:

(1) Either direct sales at $20/copy.

(2) Patented and sold/licensed it to MSFT to provide as free util like TweakUI. MS could have bundled this in like they did with other products: backup, compression, and anti-virus that they licensed from third parties.

(3) Done the above but instead had it bundled as part of the DELL/HP/LENOVO software suite.

Bill, if you had done #2 or #3, you could have afforded a whole farm of PCs now. Quelle dommage!

BTW, I didn't load up the latest version, but did skim the changelogs with my poor French. I think the only thing missing that would be useful which I think I mentioned to you before is a rule set delayed start on boot.

I am currenly using a free utility to delay BPM from loading for about 120 seconds. Why? Well, if you let BPM be active during the start, it can actually slow the boot. Basically, everything is trying to initialize. Even if you latter want to bind certain memory resident applications like firewalls, security products, monitors, ... It is best to allow them full access to all CPUs at the boot; otherwise your bindings can actually delay the boot quite a bit.

Although I am short cash to donate to your next PC, I will consider writing some form of promotional brochure for BPM in English which can be used to improve awareness of BPM. It one of the most valuable performance tools I have comes across in over 20+ years working with PCs. Anyone with a multi-core without BPM has wasted their money unless they are mainly heavy users of individually multi-threaded applications.

Take care.

Hello,

Thanks for all your ideas.

I know I may have sold my soft but I really think that if I do that, I will not have so many users!

Yes, my soft is free, and I think it will always be.
Geeks want more and mode free softs, and don't want to buy.

In fact, I have been contacted by one (1) US company, that buy me a licence for a modify version of the soft. I made it, they paid me, and that's all.

Selling a soft required times, because you need a real support.
And ... my english is not good enough for a US market, and I don't have many free time to handled "pro" requests.

I know I "loose" money because my soft is free, but if I sold it, I can't do it for 20€, because only 3 persons have made such a donation for the moment.
May be 5 or 10€ max, but users prefers frees softs.
This soft is "my baby", and I have done it because:
- when dual cores appears, there was no real friendly soft to manage both priority and affinity
- it's been a long time since I want to play with affinity to distribute process on different CPU
- coding the soft allow me to really discover vb.net
It's a kind of "auto learning"

So, yes, my wife say it's a big work for "nothing", because I don't earn a lot of money with it. But I don't care, it's a passion Smile

MessageSujet: Just a little problem for you ...   Upgrading v3150 -> v3310? Icon_minitimeVen 27 Fév - 15:37

Well, I've just remember of something:
if you use the "portable mode", start information will not be stored in the registry, so BPM will not start automatically with windows, for exemple.

I tell you that, cause I'm working on your request: using a start delay.
And ... well, it works, but I have to specify to use a delay in a command line parameter when BPM start, because if I don't do that, the delay is always applied, even if you launch the soft manually.

The cmdline param is the only way to know if BPM start with windows, or is launched by the user.
So you will have to not use portable mode to use the feature ... sorry :p

Well, I am currently using PCMAG's StartupCop2 to delay BPM's launch by 2 minutes. And there are other utilities that do something similar. Basically, the utility loads at startup and then delays things which were previously in the registry. Often people use such utilities to speed the boot process and reduce the made scramble of programs trying to initialize.

BTW, I understand the motivation to just do a fun project to learn a new technology. I produced a shareware product which I knew would never sell many copies mainly to learn a PC/DB technology many years ago.

Thanks.
